Icons, information graphics, and dynamic dependent hierarchies

For our next project we will be making an integrated group of information graphics and objects designed to aid people as they physically and conceptually navigate the world of MCA. The first step is to create a full list of both physical spaces (studios, bathrooms, galleries, library, offices, sleeze, Callicott, etc.) and academic and administrative entities/departments (illustration, painting, sculpture, registrar, business office, student life, advancement, maintenance, etc.). It will then be helpful to think about how you might group these functions, services, spaces, and organizational departments (such as academic and administrative, or public and private, or design arts and fine arts). From your lists and groupings start sketching ideas for graphics which would represent the different departments, locations, and services. What is the essence of what happens in each discipline? What is the essence of what happens in each space? How can you visually communicate these essential qualities to a viewer such that they might intuitively understand function and or purpose?

Bring in your research, your lists, groups, and your preliminary sketches representing the different physical, departmental, and institutional elements. Your sketches must be hand drawn at this phase of the project. Remember, this is expansive phase of the project. Translation: more is better. Dive in.
